Furniture Hall of Fame adopts three-year plan
Aimed at researching, preserving industry's history
HIGH POINT — Directors of the American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation have launched a three-year plan to preserve the history of the industry.
The board adopted a four-point plan after a strategic planning session earlier this year, said Jeff Cook, president of the foundation.
"As we continue to build momentum and implement the first part of our mission - to research, collect and preserve our cultural, economic and artistic history - it's critical that we as a board formally adopt a strategic plan to accomplish our vision," he said.
The four initiatives are:
• Publishing its oral histories. The foundation says it's in the process of publishing the 40 oral histories of industry leaders it has conducted. Each will be bound in a hardcover book with photographs that will be sold to the industry and public. The histories also will be available online.
• Soliciting memorabilia. Cook said the foundation is seeking materials or scans of company histories, photographs, advertising and marketing materials that will be made available to researchers and visitors to the foundation's website. The foundation also will offer assistance and guidelines to companies that wish to preserve their own histories, as long as the information is shared with the Hall of Fame.
• Developing a Wall of Fame. The foundation plans to commission a written history of the industry including a timeline of developments in retail and manufacturing, along with memorabilia, Cook said. The information will be placed online and in a public exhibit.
• Updating its website. FurnitureDealer.net has donated its services to update the foundation's website at www.furniturehalloffame.com.
"This is a big undertaking that will take years to accomplish, but we have to start somewhere and the board believes the time is now," Cook said. "We are at a pivotal point. We must preserve our histories and the stories of our legends before they slip away from us forever."
